Both ERW Carbon Steel pipes and Spiral Pipes are used to transport oil, gas, and chemicals. They have similar utilities and applications. However, when you look further into their workings, one can find differences in various aspects. If looked into closely, one can point out several differences or variations in the production process, raw materials used, the cost of manufacturing, difficulties, and ease in fabrication, and lastly the geometric size of the pipes. Let’s dive deeper into these aspects to get a clear overview of the differences between ERW Steel pipes and Spiral Pipes.
The variations in the production process:
ERW Carbon Steel pipes are manufactured through a hot rolling process. It has minimal residual strength. The residual stress can be reduced further by welding, heat treatment, water pressure, and other procedures. A welding wire is not necessary. Lack of welding wire keeps the physical and chemical composition metal unaffected. The quality of the ERW Carbon Steel pipes depends on the quality of the sheet used.
In the Spiral Steel Pipe, the geometric stress is complex. Spiral pipes are generally stronger than ERW carbon steel pipes. Spiral Steel pipes have greater residual stress or tensile stress. The Spiral Pipes are subjected to internal pressure which results in the weakening of the pipes bearing capacity. Spiral pipes are made by joining or welding steel plates together using wires with chemical components. Spiral pipes are prone to bubbles and hot cracks post welding. The hardness is high during the welding process. The heat influence keeps spiking during the welding procedure.
The difference in Raw Material:
The raw material used to manufacture ERW carbon steel pipes is produced using hot-rolled coils. They have a stable chemical composition and physical properties.
Spiral Steel Pipes use low-grade hot rolled strips. Their chemical properties and physical properties are not very stable.
Costing and acquisition difficulty:
The manufacturing cost of spiral steel pipes is higher than ERW carbon steel pipes. They are used by petroleum and petrochemical industries.
Geometric Differences:
ERW Carbon Steel pipes have higher geometric accuracy. It is difficult to butt weld these pipes on the spot. ERW pipes have a 100% weld coefficient. Spiral pipes have a greater length than ERW carbon steel pipes. The longer the pipe more the defect rate.
